My Caffeine FREE Journey
In October 2017 it dawned upon me that I was consuming too much coffee. In fact I was highly addicted to the stuff often drinking 10 cups a day believing it was getting me through the day. I was living for the next caffeine high. When I then thought about the amount of dairy I was consuming plus the aspartame filled sweeteners I was popping into every cup I realised it was time for change so I decided to go caffeine free for 3 weeks. It’s now been 3 months since I had my last coffee and there’s no going back for me. Ive lived to tell the tale with some surprising results. Don’t get me wrong – the first 4 days were hideous, I felt like the back of my head was literally going crack open and found myself pacing the kitchen thinking about boiling the kettle. Serious caffeine withdrawal had set in. But i made it through the other side. By day 6 the benefits started to show one by one……....
If you’ve ever seen a Skincare Therapist for acne, rosacea, or any kind of inflammation related skin issue, I bet you’ve heard this advice before: Stop drinking coffee. As a Beauty Therapist Ive given this advice countless times, but never acted upon it myself. I have a passion for a healthy lifestyle and a constant quest for better skin but never pin pointed coffee as being as damaging as it was.
You always hear people swear that giving up [insert vice here] changed everything for their skin. Most often, it’s dairy, sugar, wheat, or coffee. Why is coffee the culprit? Long, scientific story short: It’s because coffee is highly acidic. High doses of acidic caffeine mess with your hormones, namely your stress hormones, which control your skin’s oil production. On top of that, it can act as a diuretic, dehydrating your skin if you drink too much. I fall into the ten-cups-a-day group, so on the dehydration front I was becoming a shrivelled prune. Stopping my coffee intake has also increased my Water intake. Double bonus. My Skin feels plumper and healthier and (fingers crossed) has been blemish free.
I don’t mind admitting I suffer from Anxiety. It often comes from nowhere but can lead to scary anxiety attacks and a constant feeling of doom. We have just completed one of our busiest periods at work, one of the most hectic terms on the school calendar but I can honestly say I have take it all in my stride over the last couple of months. I feel calmer and more in control than I have done in years, I’m much more patient with my 2 young children and feel like I can handle pretty much anything thrown at me.
I normally loathe the Winter months due to being a Raynaud’s Syndrome sufferer. This medical condition causes arteries to spasm resulting in decreased blood flow mainly affecting your hands and feet causing them to turn white and feel completely numb. The sensation of the blood flow returning can often be very painful. The winter months consisted of daily attacks for me, even a trip to the supermarket chilled isle would send my extremities into a state of frozen panic. My last Raynaud’s attack was September 2017. It’s by no means proven that the vessel constricting result of caffeine affects Raynaud’s but there is s clear link. My results speak for themselves.
Now the big one which has had the most impact and in fact will improve all areas of my life – Sleep! I no longer stare at the ceiling for hours after getting into bed and toss and turn all night. I can get 7 hours straight through which would have been unheard of for me. Needless to say this has has a huge benefit on my state of well being. Sleep is ultimately super important to us humans and its now clear my caffeine addiction was having a huge impact on my sleep pattern. We all know that feeling of waking up tired, laying there wondering how you are going to manage the day ahead, thinking up excuses as to why you can call in sick and hold an unofficial Duvet day… I now feel the benefits of a much calmer more consistent sleep pattern. I longer trade my sleep for Espresso.
